The movie -- Sexo por Compasion -- is outstanding. It's out on DVD recently, made in 2000.
The film-maker turns a lot of ideas upside down. Can a person be too good? Is sex only for pleasure
or passion? Can a married woman have sex with other men without being unfaithful? And where does the
church and faith stand in all of these issues? (Since it's Spanish, the Catholic church and its trappings
have a role, of course.) Can married women see that it might be a good thing for their husbands to have
sex with another woman? What does sex mean anyway? I have to say that I am glad that women have been able
to become movie makers; they have a different sensibility; this film illustrates a non-male mind at work,
but my male friend found it powerful and provocative. This film drifts from black and white to color
as "Pleasantville" did, though the shift is about joy and understanding more than it is about wisdom
and knowledge and sexuality. Even though sex plays a central role, there is no bed nudity. It is very
intellectually stimulating -- unlike so many American movies.
